1 A Study on the Community Contributions of Professional Sports Team by Analyzing the Relationship between Regional Identity, Sense of Community, and Team Identity

Abstract

PURPOSE This study developed and tested a theoretical research model delineating the relationships between sports consumers’ team identity and their response to regional identity, sense of community, and community contributions. METHODS To achieve the purpose of this study, a total of 1,196 spectators who attended professional baseball games were surveyed. For the data analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, convergent validity, discriminate validity, and composite reliability were performed to confirm the validity and reliability of the scale through AMOS 24.0. Research model and hypothesis testing were conducted using structural equation modeling, which used data from ten different professional baseball team area contexts. RESULTS The results provide empirical evidence of the positive influence of sports consumers’ regional identity and sense of community on team identity toward community contributions in sporting event area contexts. CONCLUSIONS This study confirmed the role of regional identity and sense of community in building professional sports team identities and community contributions.

2 Cultural Changes at Korean Tennis Clubs Due to COVID-19 : Focusing on the Accepted Culture

Abstract

PURPOSE This study examined the cultural experiences of tennis club members that have changed due to COVID-19, specifically emphasizing the accepted culture within these clubs. METHODS Seven tennis club members, with over five years of experience, active participation in two or more clubs, and a history of active participation, were interviewed using in-depth interviews and a semi-structured questionnaire. RESULTS Firstly, the tennis club members accepted the “no contact” culture that has emerged since COVID-19. Secondly, social distancing made getting together in large groups difficult, and tennis club activities became more limited. This has led to weakening the tennis club community, which is different from what we have seen before. Lastly, the growing interest in non-traditional content has led to an increase in participants enjoying tennis through social media. The information and experiences gained through social media have changed the perception of coaching. CONCLUSIONS The cultures that tennis players have adopted due to COVID-19 are expected to continue in the future. The findings from this study may provide evidence for understanding the changing culture of sports in the future.

3 The justification theory of physical education: The reason why physical education is requested in ‘emotional capitalism’ society

Abstract

Purpose This purpose of this study was to understand how physical education can contribute to healthy emotions and activities of human beings. Methods We analyze Eva Illouz's emotional capitalism theory, the position and role of emotions in Spinoza, and Durkheim's theory of religious sociology. Results Illouz shows that emotions are coordinated by rationality through the analysis of emotional capitalism, and that expressions of natural emotions are restricted and controlled even in the area of ​​intimacy. In Spinoza, emotions are divided into three emotions: joy, sadness, and desire as concepts of body movements. Emotions reveal that they are closely related to human activity, and emotions of joy are calculated for human emotional development Emphasize the need to organize meetings of possible bodies. Durkheim argues that while society is placed in a religious position, society is the subject of individual praise and the reality of baptizing individuals into morality. At this time, festivals and rituals reveal individuals to be a powerful mechanism that leads to devotion to society and strengthens individual’s sense of community and morality. Conclusions Making physical education classes as festivals enhances students' sense of community. It can also be an activity that allows students to have healthy moral and emotional energy.

4 A Historiographical Review on Public/Popular History of Sport and Its Implication for Korean Sport Historiography

Abstract

As an attempt to think about the popularization of Korean sport history, this paper discusses three main things. First, it will be introduced what public/popular history is, how it has been developed, and why it is important to history as an academic discipline. Second, it will be summarized how sport historian embraced public/popular history into their practices in terms of what theoretical, critical, and methodological aspects they have focused. Third, I will discus why public/popular history is useful in the ways in which Korean sport history envisions its popularization in Korean society. To be more specific, I highlight two ideas: an insight for understanding sport history as a process and sport historiansʼ role of critic. Based upon these two, I will argue that Korean sport historians might need to actively embrace practices of public/popular history into their studies of the Korean sporting past.
