PURPOSE High blood pressure and obesity pose significant health problems for older individuals. Previous studies showed that regular exercise improves physical fitness factors and decreases blood pressure and obesity. Therefore, this study investigated differences in blood pressure and obesity according to the physical fitness level of Korean older individuals using the National Fitness 100 data and used them to recognize the importance of maintaining physical fitness through regular physical activity or exercise for older individuals. METHODS From 2013 to 2019, a total of 218,848 subjects (men=74,271, women=144,577) aged ≥65 years who participated in the National Fitness 100 had their muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, balance, coordination, and flexibility measured, and they were ascribed a fitness level. Blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), percentage of bodyfat, and waist circumference were measured to compare the difference in fitness level. RESULTS There was a significant difference in the systolic and diastolic blood pressure in older men, and the diastolic blood pressure of older women by the fitness level (p<.001). In both older men and women, there was a significant difference in BMI, percentage of bodyfat, and waist circumference according to the fitness level (p<.001). CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, men and women showed different aspects in blood pressure, but Korean older individuals with having a high level of fitness managed their weight and body fat well. The decrease in obesity and improvement of physical fitness through regular physical activity and exercise could be a positive effect on maintaining health and extending healthy life years.
Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore cultural meanings of the concept of ‘Che-Yuk-In’ through a critical examination of how it was described, portrayed, and represented in the narratives of the mainstream newspapers in the early days of the nation(1945-1961). Methods As for the data collection and method, a total of 338 articles were collected by searching of "Che-Yuk-In" through the database provided by the Naver News Library. Sorting out them with the point of whether the concept simply denotes the number of players or the majority of athletes, for example, we select 140 column-type articles and analyzed how it serves as a linguistic element and what discourses were involved in the narratives. Results Our argument is twofold: 1) the concept of ‘Che-Yuk-In’ is a kind of self-representative terminology with which a particular group of people, who call themselves ‘Che-Yuk-In’, construct their collective identity into a particular type of the idealized subject, so-called sporting citizen, and 2) this construction consists of two functions: one is to share the emotion of pride by celebrating success and achievements of the sporting figures, and the other is to collectively reflect shame by criticizing negative incidents and controversies such as corruption, factional disputes, violent behaviors, which broke in the sporting practices. Conclusions With a brief summary, this paper concludes with some suggestions for future studies, in terms of how the shameful past should be embraced within the field of Korean sport history, and why a conceptual history of the ‘Che-Yuk-In’ might need to be further expanded.
Purpose Recently, studies associated with the negative physical and mental effects of athletes’ pain have received extensive attention. This study confirmed the validity of the pain catastrophizing scale (PCS) developed in clinical settings and is widely used in the sports field, and examined their relationship between the perceived stress levels and fear of pain. Methods The pain catastrophizing consisted of 13 items of three factors which are Helplessness (6 items), Rumination(4 items), Magnification(3 items). To verify the validity, PSC was revised by following the recommended revision guideline procedures. To test the validation of pain catastrophizing, 206 adult athletes were recruited including the collegiate, professional, and national levels. The participants were instructed to complete questionnaires to assess the level of pain catastrophizing, perceived stress, and fear of pain. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to test the fit of measurement model was adopted to examine three higher-order three-factor measurement models. Results In results, confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the Korean version of the pain catastrophizing scale demonstrated a good model fit of measurement when removing one item with a significantly lower factor load as well as the reliability of the scale was reasonable. The pain catastrophizing had a meaningful positive direct relation with perceived stress level and fear of severe pain. In addition, construct validity and predictive validity of PCS showed valid. Conclusions Based on the results of this study, the Korean sports pain catastrophizing scale can be used to measure the subjective pain intensity of Korean athletes. In addition, it is expected to provide fundamental information for evaluating athletes’ post-injury rehabilitation processes.
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of midsole hardness on gait mechanisms by wearing a backpack. Methods Ten healthy adult males(age:23.20±1.33yrs, heights: 1.72±0.03cm, weights: 67.60±5.95kg) participated in this study. Subjects walked at a speed of 1.5m/s in an 8m section wearing randomly selected midsole hardness (Soft, Medium, Hard) shoes and backpack (30% of body weight). For measurement of body movement, 10 infrared cameras (Vicon motion capture system, UK) and force plate (AMTI, ORG-6, US) were used. Results First, in the shock phenomenon change, the ground contact time was longer when wearing a backpack. Second, in the shock absorption strategy, the pack plantarflexion velocity at the ankle joint was faster in Hard than Soft, and the pack dorsiflexion moment decreased when wearing a backpack (p<.05). Also, the pack extension moment of the knee increased significantly when wearing a backpack. Fourth, in the mechanical negative work, the ankle joint performed less work than the medium soft, and the knee joint increased as the backpack was worn (p<.05). Conclusion As a result of this study, the difference in the hardness of the midsole used in this study does not seem to affect the biomechanical movement of gait even when wearing a backpack. In future studies, it is necessary to investigate the effect of the midsole through the presence or absence of shoes or inducing muscle fatigue.
Purpose This is to provide essential data for training necessary for sweeping through the analysis of muscle activity generated at this time and how much sweeping and what trajectory moves the stone when the movement of the stone is controlled through sweeping. Methods To check and record the distance between the stones by checking the stop position of the stone made by sweeping each section, the length (progress distance) and width (progress direction) were recorded using a reference table and a record preparation table. With the EMG attached, a total of 60 sweeps were made 20 times each from the beginning of the section to the end of the section. Sweeping subjects were asked to sweep as much as possible under the same conditions in all three sections. Results As a result of the study, the muscle mobilization patterns of the 1st and 2nd sections of the stone with the faster speed and the 3rd section with the stone's slower speed appeared differently. It was confirmed that the sweeping motion of curling is a motion that is used evenly among the muscles of the upper extremity, and it can be verified that it is a suitable item for the development of upper body muscles. Also, the right deltoid's muscle activity rate during push and the right triceps brachii during pull was high. Conclusion Each section of the stone's sweeping effect is an exercise that has many variables, such as changes in atmospheric temperature and humidity, changes in ice temperature, temperature-size-number of pebbles, and the edge state-resilience of stones, etc. It is judged that experience can cope with these variables and requires training.
Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify the consistency and correlation of referee evaluation according to the judging characteristics in the preliminary and semi-final of the Latin event of dance sports, thereby deriving the problem of referee reliability and suggesting alternatives for improvement. Methods The method of study is Based on the performance data of 54 amateur Latin dances match organized by the Korea Dance Sports Federation for a total of three years 11,850(preliminary rounds & semi-final). Based on the Kappa statistics and the degree of agreement(pa), the difference in the group of examination characteristics was derived and the correlation between the five Latin events was analyzed. Results As a result of through this study, the consistency of the dance sports referee and the characteristics of the judging in the event were confirmed, and the number of judges tended to be higher when the number of judges was seven, the more the number of subjects was, and the highest level of agreement was more than 70 percent of the judges. In addition, the higher the concordance of each of the five detailed items, the higher the correlation tendency. Conclusion Differences in visual aspects between dance sports judges and the difference in the judges' ratings due to the revision of the rules, the decrease in the number of competitors participating in the competition, the number of people to be eliminated in each round, and the proportion of judges with experience in the competition are different, and these differences affect the judges and show up in the scores. The Latin dance sports events based on objectivity and reliability to improve the correct standards of judges to find the same raters, work will be required and an assessment element. With a systematic way in and to carry out the review curriculum and educational development is considered necessary.
Purpose The aim of this study was to provide athletes and coaches on informations and benefits of a taper through evidence-based scientific studies and literatures in order to optimize an athlete’s top performance for the major competition. Methods Studies and literatures search was conducted using the databases RISS, KISS, SPORTDiscuss. Key words searched: taper AND(competition, OR performance, OR training, OR training). This study were eventually cited by 22 articles for results of this in total 100 articles. Results The training load is remarkably reduced during a taper. With a reduced training load, training intensity should be maintained during the taper. The training load reductions during the taper should be programmed with reducing training volume at 41% to 60% of pretaper training. The reduction of training frequency during a taper means that affect moderately trained athletes and highly trained subjects differently, reducing 30% to 50% of pretaper training and maintaining training frequencies, respectively. Detraining the duration of a taper is not easy. Most athletes is beneficial from a 2-week shorter or longer tapers, depending on their individual profiles of fitness loss, fatigue dissipation, and anxiety. The manipulations of this training program variables usually affect for most athletes and maximal performance gains. Conclusion Training intensity should be maintained during the taper, training volume reductions should be programmed at 41% to 60% of pretaper training. The reduction of training frequency could be reduced 30% to 50% of pretaper training, and most athletes is beneficial from a 2-week shorter or longer tapers. Future researches should be conducted the practical & effectual differences in individual and teamed-based sports after a taper procedure.
Purpose The purpose of this study was to find out what young amateur golfers consider the most when purchasing golf apparel and to find out the Importance-Performance attributes when choosing golf apparel. Methods Amateur golfers in their 20s through 40s who have purchased golf clothing directly were selected as the subject. A total of 350 questionnaires were distributed using the purposive sampling method, and 331 copies as a final validity sample. For data analysis exploratory factor analysis Cronbach’α, frequency analysis, and Importance-Performance analysis by using SPSS 21.0. Results First, except for ‘fancy design’, ‘water-proof function’, ‘elasticity comfort’, ‘brand name’ there were significant differences between importance and satisfaction of selection attribute. Second, ‘harmonic colors’, ‘has its own characteristics’, ‘expressing beauty’, ‘elasticity comfort’ were analyzed to be situated in quadrant Ⅰ. Third, ‘fancy design’, ‘water-proof function’, ‘temperature maintenance function’, ‘elasticity and durability’, ‘brand name’, ‘high-priced yet popular brand’, ‘popular brand’ were analyzed to be situated in quadrant Ⅱ. Fourth, ‘comfortable to wear’, ‘convenient for physical activity’ were analyzed to be situated in quadrant Ⅲ. Fifth, ‘can be also worn for outdoor wear’, ‘wear for gathering’, ‘wear as daily attire’ were analyzed to be situated in quadrant Ⅳ. Conclusions The results will be the basis for effective target marketing on young amateur golfers who are rapidly emerging and will be able to grasp the characteristics of golf apparel that they really want.
Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the location, rate, cause, and types of injuries according to the injured area by age and sports in female athletes. Methods The subject of the study was 426 female athletes who were registered as combat sports(Judo, Taekwondo, Fencing) athletes at the Korean Sports & Olympic Committee. We collected the data via online questionnaires, and conducted a frequency analysis using R statistics program. Results As a result, 51.4% of athletes experienced injuries in the past year, and the highest injury rate was shown in Taekwondo-University(0.43) during competition and Taekwondo-Professional(5.55) during training. The cause of injuries during competition was mainly due to 'as a result of me or the opponent's hittings, skills, or fouls' among internal factors, and 'recurrent injuries' among external factors. Among internal factors during training except for torso area and professional athletes, most of the injuries were also caused by ‘as a result of me or the opponent's hittings, skills, or fouls’ and ‘recurrent injuries’ among external factors. The frequency of injury was the highest in the lower extremity area across all age groups. The most frequently injured area, in the case of Judo, is skin-bleeding in the head, skin-bruise, muscle-inflammation, bone-fracture, spondylopathy(disc, stenosis, etc.) in the torso, muscle-inflammation in the upper extremity, ligament-sprain, rupture in the lower extremity. Taekwondo athletes had skin-bruise in the head, upper and lower extremities, and muscle-inflammation in the torso area, as the frequent injury cases, and Fencing athletes had all skin-bruise regardless of injuries. Conclusions The results of this study will be used to take measures for preventing injuries or to change training programs.
Purpose This study examines the Physical Education curriculum history of special schools, and then in-depth grasps the process of how the sports environment for the disabled has changed by age. Method The research method was literature review analyzing papers, reports and newspapers. For the concrete process, this study verified the relationship between the research subject and the collected data through experts and historians with disabilities to verify the sports data for the disabled. Results First, the process of physical education management of special schools is as follows. in the 1940's and 50's special schools, physical education was carried out simply by gymnastics. but, special schools were differentiated by the characteristics of the disabled, and the institutional foundation for physical education was also imitated by the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, special schools were shortened in physical education time due to the increase in the number of courses and the strengthening of disability coping programs. in the 1990s, as special sports curriculum was established, customized prescription for students with disabilities was implemented. Second, the process of changing disability sports is as follows. In the 1960s and 1970s, disability sports were mainly focused on special schools, while in the 1980s, disability sports were expanded by the government. in particular, the hosting of the 88 Seoul Olympics and Seoul Paralympics provides an opportunity to equip the disabled with a system, organization and facilities. in the 1990s disability sports was meaningful in terms of academic progress, and with the quantitative growth of the 1980s and the academic foundations of the 1990s, disability sports in the 2000s provided a legal basis and improved welfare conditions for the disabled. In the future, it is necessary to find a way to solve the value of physical education for the disabled more reasonably.
