1 Field Training Monitoring of Alpine Ski Athletes Using a Triaxial Accelerometers

Abstract

PURPOSE This study was designed to propose a quantitative base training evaluation method through alpine ski training monitoring using a triaxial accelerometer. METHODS Twelve Korean alpine ski athletes, six each in France and New Zealand, participated in this study. Activity data during training and daily living were collected for 7 days via the Actigraph GT9X. The collected data were downloaded through ActiLife Ver 6.13.1. Energy expenditure was calculated with Freedson (2011), and the resting metabolic rate was corrected using the Harris & Benedict (1918) formula. Further, the physical activity intensity classification criteria and METs formula of Freedson (1998) were used to classify hourly activity intensity. The collected data were organized by date, time, intensity, and energy expenditure using Microsoft Excel 2016. Differences between weekdays vs. weekends and skiing vs. physical training were analyzed through a paired sample t-test using Windows SPSS 23 with a significance level of a=.05. RESULTS First, both groups showed repetitive on and off high-intensity activities during scheduled ski training and competition. Second, moderate-intensity activities accounted for an average of 6-10%, and the weekly total time and intensity of MVPA was very high. Finally, the group from France showed differences in total energy expenditure during weekdays vs. weekends (p<.05) and the energy expenditure of both ski training and physical training during weekdays vs. weekends (p<.05). The New Zealand group showed a difference in total energy consumption during weekdays vs. weekends (p<.05). CONCLUSIONS A systematic training program based on quantitative training evaluation should be developed for alpine ski athletes to maintain proper rest and exercise intensity levels.

Abstract

PURPOSE This study aimed to develop physique and basic physical fitness evaluation criteria for middle school soccer players, providing a foundation for training and player development to be used by coaches in the field. METHODS The study involved 440 middle school soccer players (Grade 1=178, Grade 2=132, and Grade 3=130). Measurements were conducted on seven physique and ten basic physical fitness factors. Measurement results were organized using Windows Excel 2021 and descriptive statistics were performed using Windows SPSS 26.0. Based on the descriptive statistics of the measurement results, the Cajori 5-Grade evaluation method was applied to establish evaluation criteria for each grade and fitness component. RESULTS The study results provide evaluation criteria for middle school soccer players based on the measured data, considering grade, physique, and basic physical fitness. CONCLUSIONS The criteria established in this study are expected to be widely utilized by coaches in the field to set training goals for areas such as player selection, development, injury prevention, and rehabilitation.


3 Analysis of the Interrater Reliability and Agreement of Breaking Battles in the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympics

Abstract

PURPOSE This study aimed to establish a standardized evaluation of the consistency and reliability of the results of the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympics. METHODS The results of the preliminary and the final rounds of the individual Boys and Girls competition of the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympics were collected. Data were organized using Microsoft Windows Excel 2021. Windows SPSS 26.0 was used for descriptive statistics. Intraclass correlation coefficient calculation was used to analyze the evaluation score. The winner/loser decision, and the evaluation interrater agreement was confirmed using Fleiss' kappa. RESULTS There was a difference in the scores given by the judges in both the preliminary and final rounds of both competitions. A low correlation was observed between the decided winner of the judges, and the point variance for each item. CONCLUSIONS In the trivium value system, differences in the evaluation strategies of the judges may exist. Thus, improvements to standardize evaluation should be implemented. In addition, this scoring system considers various factors in the evaluation process, and the scoring system is complicated. Therefore, there may be a need to revise the evaluation system and find the optimal number of judges to create a better evaluation.
