11 Analysis of daily physical activity of male and female middle school students according to periods

Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this study is to measure the daily physical activity of male and female middle school students according to the period (VD: vaction day, SNPE: school day no PE, SPE: school day with PE) by using 3-axis accelerometer, and to compare the characteristics of adolescent physical activity according to gender and period. Methods The subjects were 130 middle school students (68 male, 62 female students). Data collection was performed using a 3-axis accelerometer(GT3X model, ActiGraph). Collected data were converted into time by intensity and rate using physical activity analysis program (Actilife v6.11.9) and analyzed by statistical program (SPSS 25.0). One-way ANOVA and independent sample t-test were used for statistical analysis. Tukey's HSD was used as a post analysis. The statistical significance level was .05. Results As a result, during each periods(VD, SNPE, and SPE), except for MVPA(moderate to vigorous physical activity) time on SPE, sedentary and MVPA time were significantly higher in female students, and low intensity and total physical activity time were significantly higher in male students. For male students, total physical activity time was higher in the order of SPE, SNPE, and VD, and for female students, physical activity time during the semester(SNPE and SPE) was significantly higher than VD. For male students, MVPA time was significantly high in order of SPE, SNPE, and VD, and for female students, it was high in order of SPE, SNPE, and VD but only significant difference occurred between SPE and VD. For both male and female students, sedentary time was high in the order of VD, SNPE, and SPE, but the sedentary time during vacation was significantly higher than during the semester. Conclusions When summarizing the results, first, it was confirmed that school and physical education classes as a physical activity space play a significant role in physical activity, especially MVPA, of male and female middle school students, second, the physical activity effect of physical education class was found to be more effective in male students. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to conduct studies on various grades and to explore various factors affecting physical activity in a complex way.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate structural characteristics and participants` roles & functions of sport policy network in Korea, by social network analysis on structural characteristics of sport policy network and AHP analysis on participants` roles and functions. For that, 21 executive officers from 19 organizations and agencies related to sports policy were selected as study subjects, and, the materials collected from whole twice surveys on them were analysed by Ucinet 6 and Expert Choice 2000 program. As the results, the governmental organizations like the Blue House and Ministry of CultureㆍSports and Tourism composed the central position group of sport policy network of Korea, and took the main functions of planing and arrangement within their main roles of policy agenda formation and policy decision, so, sport policy network of Korea could be called centralized network by government. And, in cases of private agencies, Korea Sports Council composed the central position group only in policy network of professional sport, Korea Council of Sport for All of sport for all, and Korea Sports Association for the Disabled of disability sport, and, each of them took the main roles and functions of policy execution in their fields, so, it was obvious that the private agencies were divided into their own sport policy areas.


13 An Empirical Study on Factors Affecting the Operating Balance and Use of Public Sports Facilities

Abstract

Based on public sports facilities’ census data, this study attempts to empirically analyze to the factors affecting the operating balance and use of public sports facilities(PSF). Analysis was carried out through multiple regression analysis using SPSS and location characteristics analysis using GIS. The total floor area and population was confirmed to influence operating balance and use(DV). Management body influence differed for DV (use and operating balance of PSF) by type of PSF. Consequently, this requires diversification of the management body. The size of facilities and location characteristics(population and zoning) are positive effect on the operating balance and Use of PSF. In order to solve the problem of location restriction and security of marketability, it is possible to take into account the integrated management and sports club’s use of large-scale sports facilities.


14 A Comparative Analysis of the Methodology of Sport and Physical Activity Participation Surveys in England, Australia, and South Korea

Abstract

This article analyzes and compares the methodologies used in physical activity participation surveys from England, Australia, and South Korea. Specifically, it examines the “2021–22 Active Lives Adult Survey” from England, the “2021–22 AusPlay (15+)” from Australia, and the “2022 National Sports Participation Survey” from South Korea, highlighting both similarities and differences in their approaches. The analysis led to two key insights. First, there is a need to expand the scope of respondents in South Korea’s National Sports Participation Survey. Currently, the survey targets only 0.02% of the population aged ≥10 years, whereas the surveys in England and Australia gather data from a wider age range and more diverse regions. Therefore, South Korea should adopt online, postal, and mobile survey methods to widen the respondent pool and enhance the representativeness and reliability of the data collected. Second, South Korea needs to update its physical activity participation standards. The current benchmarks fall below international recommendations. Establishing new criteria that specify activity duration, intensity, and type is essential for effectively improving public health policies. The results of this study emphasize the importance of accurately assessing and enhancing physical activity participation in South Korea. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of effective sports policy standards in line with the World Health Organization’s global action plan.


15 Exploring the educational meaning of school physical education policy through international comparative study

Abstract

Purpose This study aims at investing the educational meanings of school physical education policy by analyzing the direction (ideal goal, goal, objective and program) of the policy in Korea and England. Methods The comparative research design was conducted by the policy literature analysis. In order to clarify the significance of the main discourse embedded the school physical education policy to the educational practice, I used qualitative content analysis based on the interpretive paradigm. Results The school physical education policy in Korea is divided into goal for general students and student athletes for 'happy students and school life', while the policy in England seeks to promote participation of competitive sports through school-community linkage for lifelong sports participation. As a result of the discourse analysis, the ambiguity of school physical education policy due to the complexity of various discourses (e.g. moral development, health, sports) diminishes the effectiveness of policy implementation as well as the teachers’ educational practice. In addition, competition sports discourse has been analyzed to limit the participation of many students in sports and to adversely affect lifelong participation in sports. Conclusions In conclusion, It is necessary to activate theoretical and empirical research that is the basis of building the school physical education policy direction and to establish cooperative governance for the policy implementation. In addition, student participation in lifelong sports and evidence-based policy making and practice are required.

Abstract

When the long-awaited KSME in PESS was established in 1998, KSME faced a turning point in its growth. Following the changes in both quality and quantity of the society's researches since its establishment and seeking for future themes is important for the society. This research analyzed the society's research trend using mainly the Korean Journal of ME in PESS. Then, by examining the physical fitness test, it proposed possible future themes for the KSME. This research also looked into the American Kinesmetrics’ contribution to Kinesiology, its research trend and future researches The KSME's recent researches show refined quality, diversified themes and reinforcements in practical researches. Regarding the themes, the reliability and validity of tests became predominant, sports analysis and physical activity emerged, and interest in measurement and evaluation in school PE was low. Possible research themes in the future are measurement and evaluation in school PE, game analysis and sport big data. The recent interest of the American Kinesmetrics was the cross validation of criterion-referenced physical fitness cut-off score, the validation of the guideline for physical activity, and the relationship between sedentary behavior and health. Possible future research themes of the American Kinesmetrics were the refinement of test methods, the effectiveness of the physical fitness test award system, and the application of the ubiquitous wearable technology.

17 Understanding Coping Incidents and Growth Processes of Girls with Learned Helplessness in Middle School Physical Education

Abstract

PURPOSE This study identifies girls with learned helplessness in middle school physical education coping mechanism and growth process. METHODS Eight female 9th graders who previously experienced learned helplessness in physical education were purposely selected with their physical education teachers’ recommendation. After individual in-depth interviews, data were analyzed using inducted data analysis. RESULTS Findings show that the girls could overcome learned helplessness through their own will and with support of peers and physical education teachers. Moreover, they have undergone various growth processes after coping with learned helplessness. Recently, they have self-confidence in physical education classes and desire to learn physical education. Additionally, results showed that the girls’ learning will in physical education influenced other subject matters, which helped them overcome new challenges in their school and daily lives. CONCLUSIONS Results can be used as practical guidelines to develop educational programs and create policies for girls with learned helplessness.

Abstract

Purpose This study tells about my life about the past time when I studied for the teacher certification examination, using autoethnography. Methods It primarily used personal memories and diaries. The collected data was analyzed by applying longitudinal coding method through technical categories. Results The finding of this study is described in a chronological order as follows. The first part is about my unstable ego formed in my puberty period just like riding a roller coaster. It mainly features the process of choosing a career path when I was in school and the important starting point that made me today. The second part describes about my life after entering the department of physical education. I joined the military only to flee from a fruitless college life where I was wearing an unbefitting mask to hide myself from the world that is completely beyond my control. In the military, I was lucky to realize how to apply my major to set up my career path by coincidence. The third part is about the process of finding a genuine meaning of being a physical education teacher through a transitional period experienced after returning to school and form a stable self. Lastly, passing teacher certification examination with undaunted struggles boosted my self-esteem and self-efficacy and solidified my self-identity in the end. In addition, it is possible to get a glimpse of the attitudes that teachers need to have for a teaching career in the last part. Conclusions What I want to say throughout my descriptive story is that preparing for the teacher certification examination itself is a great challenge as well as a courageous decision for the candidates, but it is an attainable goal if they try with all their heart.


19 A Study on Market Advantage of Sport Products by Brand Origin in the Korean Market : Focused on Attribute Evaluation of Sport Products, Brand Equity, and Purchase Intention

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine competitiveness of sport product companies by brand origin in the Korean market by analyzing attribute evaluation of sport products, brand equity, and purchase intention and their causal relationship. Competitive sport brands were selected in global, Japanese, and Korean brands by a pilot survey. Then, this study selected a population participating in sports for all, elite sports, professional sports, and leisure sports and 498 effective questionnaires were secured. As a result, Korean consumers for sport products evaluated global sport brands in the highest level, Japanese sport brands in the moderate level, and Korean sport brands in the lowest level in the evaluation of attribute evaluation of sport products, brand equity, and purchase intention. Moreover, the evaluation of participating types in sports for all, elite sports, professional sports, and leisure sports showed the same result in the order of global, Japanese, and Korean sport brands. Global sport brands had a sequential causal relationship from attribute evaluation of sport products to brand equity and purchase intention and formed a consumption behavior model that attribute evaluation of sport products led to purchase intention. On the other hand, while Korean sport brands had a sequential causal relationship from attribute evaluation of sport products to brand equity and purchase intention, attribute evaluation of sport products did not lead to purchase intention. Finally, it was confirmed that global brands such as Nike and Adidas had a high market position and Korean sport consumers’ purchase behavior was determined based on information of product attributes and brand equity.


20 Research on the human rights violation of semi-professional athletes in the workplace

Abstract

Purpose This study is to investigate the human rights violations of Semi-professional team athletes. Methods The subjects of the survey were 4,069 people in total of 56 sports athletes from teams. than, 1,251 athletes who agreed to provide personal information (635 males and 616 females) were sampled. The survey tool consisted of a total of 76 questions asking about violence, sexual violence, and general characteristics of semi-professional athletes. Results were frequency analysis, cross-analysis, and multiple response analysis. Results Despite being an adult athlete in the semi-professional Team's Workplace Sports Team, life controls were severe in the sports team and human rights violations, such as verbal and physical violence, were widely observed, and sexual harassment and sexual violence were not small. The main perpetrators were the leaders and senior players, and the venue was the training ground. The players were in an environment where they were forced to respond passively for fear of hierarchical, collective atmosphere and personal disadvantages, and were blind spots for labor rights in terms of contracts and treatment. Conclusion To human rights violations of semi-professional athletes as the structural problems of the Korean sports. It is necessary to strengthen human rights education by the workplace movement department and conduct regular human rights surveys, and legal institutionalization to establish a disciplinary information system for perpetrators. In addition, by enacting guidelines for human rights in the sports world, a system should be prepared so that the victims can actively express their intentions.
