Abstract

PURPOSE This study investigated the associations between physical fitness and fall efficacy with thigh circumference in elderly women with osteopenia/osteoporosis. METHODS A total of 166 female participants aged 76.3±5.0 years with –1.0≥T-score of femur neck bone mineral density were voluntarily recruited from local community centers. The participants were classified as low 25%, middle 50%, and high 25% groups based on their thigh circumference. Physical fitness measurements, including strength, flexibility, aerobic endurance, and balance were measured with a standardized protocol. The Korean version of the fall efficacy scale (K-FES) was used to assess fall efficacy. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odd ratio (OR) of poor physical fitness and low fall efficacy according to thigh circumference levels. RESULTS In terms of physical fitness, the middle 50% group (OR=0.430, 95% CI=0.194-0.953) and high 25% group (OR=0.129, 95% CI=0.049-0.343) had significantly higher linear trend for poor physical fitness compared to the low 25% group (reference), (p<0.001). In fall efficacy, the middle 50% group (OR=0.279, 95% CI=0.119-0.656) and high 25% group (OR=0.100, 95% CI=0.036-0.275) had significantly higher linear trend for low fall efficacy compared to the low 25% group (reference) (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS The current findings suggest that maintaining high thigh circumference via regular physical activity and diet may contribute to attenuation of decreased risk for poor physical fitness and low fall efficacy in elderly women with osteopenia/osteoporosis.

Abstract

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to understand the athletic identity of youth football players and to trace its changing trend. METHODS Participants of this study included 93 players in 2005 and 94 players in 2021, who were in middle and high schools. All participants answered open-ended questionnaires. After the results of the inductive content analysis, the changing trend of the results was assessed. RESULTS The athletic identity of youth football players were collected from 811 raw data samples collected in 2005 and 741 collected in 2021 and categorized into 19 sub-categories and 5 categories. The results show a tendency to be specific to football. The athletic identity of a football player itself is weakening, being replaced by the identity of being a student. The role of the camp is also weakening, while more privacy and autonomy are allowed to the players. As a result, efforts to secure the players’ right to study were accepted by the players, and expected to decrease as camp life with limited privacy is on the decline, and as senses toward one’s physical competence are changing. CONCLUSIONS Sociocultural contexts, including changes in the system and social modifications, are reflected in the football player's athletic identity and its changes. The athletic identity of youth football players has changed from its 2005 version of unacademic camp life with limited privacy to the 2021 version, where the player leaves camp to be provided with privacy and attend classes.

43 The Relationship of Self-Presentation, Stress Coping, and Competitive State Anxiety in Elite Athletes

Abstract

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to verify the mediated effect between self-presentation, stress coping, and competitive state anxiety among domestic elite athletes and to identify the intermediate effects of stress coping in the relationship between self-presentation and competitive state anxiety. METHODS The study was conducted with 259 elite athletes. The relationship between self-presentation, stress coping and competitive state anxiety was verified using the SPSS and AMOS. RESULTS The results of this study were as follows. First, Self-presentation affected positively on stress coping. Second, Stress coping affected positively on competitive state anxiety. Third, Self-presentation affected positively on competitive state. Lastly, stress coping mediated significantly the relationship between self-presentation and competitive state anxiety. CONCLUSIONS The result of this study shows that the competitive anxiety of elite athletes depends on the meaning of self-presentation, and the stress coping is deeply related to competitive state anxiety. In conclusion, it was determined that it provided basic data to understand the competitive state anxiety of players in various ways.

44 Development of a College Life Adaptation Program for Freshman Student-Athletes

Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop an effective college life adaptation program for freshman student-athletes. Methods A total of 160 student-athletes and 5 experts agreed to participate in this study. Four procedures were followed in this study: the needs assessment, the preliminary program development, and the application of the program. For the needs assessment, in-depth interviews were conducted, and the data were analyzed using an inductive reasoning process. Results The results of the needs investigation showed seven need factors and four interruption factors for college life adaptation. In addition, three need factors based on experience and seven interruption factors based on experience were found. The preliminary program was developed based on the needs assessment through the expert meeting, and the program consisted of four stages. Each stage consisted of three sessions, and each session contained a specific topic. The program was provided to nine freshman student-athletes in two months. As a result, the final program which consisted of four stages and thirteen sessions was developed after the reinforcement process based on evaluation of the preliminary program was conducted. Conclusions It is concluded that, the program is able to be expected to help them to understand their roles, have a better sense of responsibility and improve their self-esteem. Therefore, coaches and mental performance consultants should provide the college life adaptation program for freshman student-athletes to reduce their stress and have a better college life.

45 The Relationship Between Parental and Teachers’ Autonomy Support, Enjoyment, Self-Efficacy, Academic Effort and P·E class Flow by Middles School Students Participating in P·E Classes

Abstract

Purpose The aim of this study was to examine how middles school students in physical education class perceived relations between parental and teacher’s autonomy support, enjoyment, self-efficacy, academic effort, and P · E class flow. This study also investigate the mediating effects of enjoyment, self-efficacy, and academic effort on the relations between parental autonomy support and P · E class flow and between teacher’s autonomy support and P · E class flow. Methods For this study, 323 middle school students completed surveys to measure their perceptions of parental and teacher’s autonomy support, enjoyment, self-efficacy, academic effort, and P · E class flow. SPSS 24.0 was used to calculate descriptive statistics, reliability, and correlations. Amos 22.0 was utilized for confirmatory factor analysis, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and structural equation modeling. Additionally, 2000 bootstrap samples were requested for the mediation effect analysis. Results First, parental autonomy support was positively predictive of enjoyment and self-efficacy. Second, teacher’s autonomy support positively influenced enjoyment and self-efficacy. Third, enjoyment and self-efficacy positively affected academic effort. Forth, academic effort was positively related to P · E class flow. Fifth, there were partial mediating effects of enjoyment, self-efficacy, and academic effort on the relationship between parental autonomy support and P · E class flow. Lastly, there were partial mediating effects of enjoyment, self-efficacy, and academic effort on the relationship between teacher’s autonomy support and P · E class flow. Conclusions The study found that teachers' autonomy support was stronger predictive of student’s P · E class flow in physical education class than parent's autonomy support was. The finding is meaningful in that it is worth providing and utilizing practical knowledge from an educational perspective.

46 Exploring the educational meanings of pre-service PE teacher mentors' sports mentoring experience

Abstract

Purpose The purposes of this study were to examine the influence of a formal sports mentoring program on mentors(pre-service PE teachers), and to identify main factors affecting educational growth of the pre-service teachers. Methods Data were generated in this study using: In-depth interviews, mentoring observations, and document resources from 4 mentors and their mentees as research participants. The collected data were inductively analyzed as an iterative process of working back and forth between the data and the categories(Miles & Huberman, 1994). Results The key findings of this study are as follows. First, mentors developed pre-service teachers’ practical knowledge including teaching knowledge, environment knowledge, student knowledge within teaching contexts. Furthermore, they practiced mentee-centered education through sports mentoring not only by mentees but also for mentees. Second, with respect to the factors impacting mentors’ educational growth, there were two main factors; the systematic structure of a program and mentors’ reflexivity. Mentors improved practical knowledge through the circular ‘experiential learning’ phases the sports mentoring program provided. In addition, mentor had valuable opportunities to learn how to care mentees by reflecting on positive and negative influences deriving from interactions with their mentees. Conclusion Potential benefits were embedded in inherent nature of sport and the unique structure of mentoring. sports mentoring can provide experience of learner-friendly teaching distinct from classes of lecture type. It is necessary to be reconsidered as pre-service PE teacher education program with opportunities of other teaching practice.

Abstract

Purpose This purpose of this study was to understand how physical education can contribute to healthy emotions and activities of human beings. Methods We analyze Eva Illouz's emotional capitalism theory, the position and role of emotions in Spinoza, and Durkheim's theory of religious sociology. Results Illouz shows that emotions are coordinated by rationality through the analysis of emotional capitalism, and that expressions of natural emotions are restricted and controlled even in the area of ​​intimacy. In Spinoza, emotions are divided into three emotions: joy, sadness, and desire as concepts of body movements. Emotions reveal that they are closely related to human activity, and emotions of joy are calculated for human emotional development Emphasize the need to organize meetings of possible bodies. Durkheim argues that while society is placed in a religious position, society is the subject of individual praise and the reality of baptizing individuals into morality. At this time, festivals and rituals reveal individuals to be a powerful mechanism that leads to devotion to society and strengthens individual’s sense of community and morality. Conclusions Making physical education classes as festivals enhances students' sense of community. It can also be an activity that allows students to have healthy moral and emotional energy.

48 Analysis of Korean Professional Baseball Club SNS Message:Based on the Team Official Twitter

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to ​categorize official twitter messages and find out each team's marketing strategy by using Ruby program. ​For the analysis 3 thousands official twitter massages were used for each 4 major probaseball teams, Samsung Lions, KIA Tigers, SK Wyverns, and NC Dinos. The results were as follows. Firstly, The marketing messages of pro baseball teams were different than typical companies. Pro baseball's official twitter marketing massages can be grouped into 5 category, Team Awareness, CSR, Customer Service, Engagement and Promotion. Secondly, Twitter marketing message strategy was differentiated by each pro baseball team. ​NC Dinos using twitter to increase team awareness while Samsung Lions deliver their premium team image as a KBO league champion and highlight marketing events with star players. KIA Tigers has shown most passive activities on twitter. Most of messages were just informing game and schedule. SK Wyverns actively using twitter they were answering questions from fans and very engaged to use twitter as a marketing tool.

49 Verification of a causal model among the process of self-regulation motivation and sports performance under the coach's behavior

Abstract

Purpose: This study was to verify the relationship between coaching behavior(autonomy/controlling behavior), self-regulation motivation and performance. Method: 356 athletes (from middle to work and professional team) in individual and team sport completed coaching behavior scale developed by this researchers assessing autonomy and controlling coaching behavior perceived by players, Korea Basic Pyshoclogical Needs Scale (KBPNS) assessing basic psychological needs, Behavioral Regulation in Sport Questionnaire (BRSQ) assessing sports motivation level based on self-determination theory, and sport performance score. To estimate the relationship between coaching behavior, self-regulation motivation and performance, this study employed the structure equation modeling analysis. Results: The relationship between psychological needs, regulation motivation and performance showed that autonomy coaching behavior tend to reinforce competence and autonomy of player. These variables have a positive effect on more inner regulation motivation. Moreover, the intrinsic motivation through stimulation experience was a key factor leading to a positive performance by improving the performance strategy and skill of athletes. Conclusion: These results are meaningful as an empirical evidence that relationship between motivation and performance can be changed according to the type of coaching behavior, and that autonomous coaching behavior play an important role in maximizing the performance of player that provided theoretically form.


50 The meaning and teaching methods of critical professionalism in physical education teacher education

Abstract

There has been a growing advocacy for a critical approach to physical education teacher education(PETE) in the era of globalization and ubiquitous society. Drawing on critical pedagogy, the purpose of this paper was to explore the meanings and methods for developing critical professionalism in PETE through identifying the definitions and features of critical professionalism. The notion of critical professionalism includes four crucial components: critical reflection, social sensitivity, critical thinking, and practicability. This paper suggests an inquiry-oriented physical education teacher education to develop per-service teachers’ critical professionalism in terms of providing a range of teaching methods centered on microteaching, discussion-based lessons, critical reading and writing, and using media materials. Building on findings, it was concluded that there is a need of programs for the development of policy literacy understanding complex social and cultural contexts of school physical education. Furthermore, PETE should focus on the processes of critical reflection on the teaching and learning act itself within wider social contexts, by using an inquiry-oriented approach to PETE, which will contribute to fostering teachers’ critical capacities needed to guard the educational aims of physical education against political interference.
