Abstract

Purpose There are two purposes of this study; First is to investigate the reality of curriculum in the qualification system through the coordination process between participants’ experiences and institutional texts. Second is to identify the light and shade of the educational logics underlying the certificate courses of Level 2-sport-for-all-coach. Methods By relying on the institutional ethnography approach(Smith, 2005), the data were collected through on-site materials and semi-structural interviews with seven coaches who participated in the qualification programmes after 2015 system revision. The data were analyzed by mapping the social organization. Results The analysis shows two key findings. First, participants faced inconsistencies with institutional texts in the subcategories of qualification system and experienced (self-)rationalization process including doubt, complaint, acceptance and compromise toward the system. Second, Performance pedagogy and Craft pedagogy were operating at the root of the current qualification system, and the two logics led to the fundamental limitations(unlinked educational content, passive educational activity, and unsystematic educational operation) for the improvement of system. Conclusion The activation of the retrospective approach to distinguish the pros and cons of various educational logics was suggested. These findings are expected to provide useful implications for building the future framework to educate sport-coaches more systematically.

Abstract

Purpose The present study explores educational values of professional coaches from perspectives as educators while they are giving the players sports coaching. Since free agent system was introduced in 1999 at Korean Baseball Organization(KBO) league, the socio-economical differences between players and coaches are getting bigger and bigger. In this situation, professional coaches tend to have more difficulties in interacting with the players. The study focuses on looking into professional coaches' educational agony and reward. Also, it highlights their educational values as educators rather than coaches. Methods Two professional baseball coaches and a TV commentator participated in the study: all past professional players, and professional coaches for more than 10 years. The researchers collected data through semi-structured in-depth interviews; each participant was interviewed three times. The researchers recorded and transcribed all of the interviews; then, the researchers reread the interview transcripts and inductively produced codes for themes whenever emergent codes appeared. Verbatim quotations from the interviews are excerpted in the present research report. Results The findings indicate that, first, the participants are all highly motivated in giving lessons to the players. They all helped the players overcome the difficulties and be good players. They emphasized the importances of endeavors and attitudes during their lessons to be well-received by the players. Second, the participants agreed that good coaches should have the ability to find the potentials of the players and have personality to gain the players' trust. They always have to work and study hard to keep expertises. Conclusions This study argues that the participants are playing their roles in a sport coaching area not only as coaches, but also as educators.

Abstract

PURPOSE This study examined the marathon boom in contemporary Korean society through Baudrillard’s concepts of simulacra, signs, and difference. Specifically, it identified consumerist meanings and sign consumption patterns associated with marathon participation from the perspective of female runners. METHODS Fifteen female marathoners in their 20s and 30s who have participated in at least three marathons and have been actively involved in running-related social media activities were recruited through purposive sampling. Data were obtained from two rounds of in-depth interviews (including photo elicitation) and participant observation during marathon events. Thematic analysis was performed based on Baudrillard’s theoretical framework. RESULTS First, the traditional competitive image of marathons has shifted toward a consumer-oriented leisure activity that features different race distances and festival-like elements, illustrating the replacement of its original reality with the simulacrum of running. Second, participants treated medals and souvenirs not as mere tokens of participation but as symbols of achievement, health, and self-management and identified design, size, and brand value as key criteria for selecting events. Third, sharing photos, certification posts, and other social media practices functioned as a means of expressing social differences and concurrently as a tool for constructing a collective identity, positioning marathon participation as a setting where sign consumption facilitates social differentiation. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated the evolution of marathon participation in contemporary Korean society from mere physical activity to a symbolic practice of sign consumption in which individuals construct and express their identities and social positions. The findings highlight how cultural meanings of marathons change as they are increasingly integrated into consumer society.

Abstract

PURPOSE This study explains how the combination of autonomy support (A) and holistic attentional focus (HF) affects golf putting performance among beginners. METHODS A total of 72 novice golfers were randomly assigned to (1) external focus (EF), (2) HF, (3) A–EF, (4) A–HF, (5) A, and (6) control groups, and their putting accuracy and consistency were measured. RESULTS The experimental findings showed that the group that received only A showed better accuracy than the control group in the acquisition stage and that the best accuracy and consistency were observed when A and HF were combined. The A–HF group maintained their accuracy even after the test. CONCLUSIONS Functional performance can be enhanced simply by providing A, and more positive effects can be expected when A interventions are implemented with HF than with EF.

Abstract

PURPOSE This study aimed to explore the effective and pragmatic idea regarding the development of physical education teacher education (PETE) programs in China. These programs share both similarities and differences in China and Korea, and they are also discussed here. METHODS Six universities reflecting the regional specificities of Korea and China were selected following consultation with experts. Data collected through in-depth interviews, non-participatory observation, literature, and local documents were analyzed and interpreted by using the comparative analysis research method. RESULTS First, when comparing the curriculum, which was divided into liberal arts, major, and teaching subjects in both countries, the ratio of liberal arts and teaching subjects was similar in Korea following major subjects. As for China, major subjects came in first, followed by liberal arts and teaching subjects. Second, the relative pros and cons of preliminary sports teacher education in Korea and China were aimed at nurturing competent sports experts with both expertise and personality. They were generally similar in terms of content dimensions; however, they were found to be different in several areas. Particularly in the case of China regarding the teaching subject, practical subjects that were of pragmatic help to the school field were found to be relatively insufficient. Third, the implications for improving China's preliminary PETE were to emphasize the importance of personality in educational goals at the goal level, and as for the content level, it was necessary to replaced them with classes that could be of pragmatic use in the existing teaching method. Furthermore, at the methodological level, professional training of physical education teachers should be proposed, training them to cultivate character. Finally, more positive changes can be pursued if efforts at the environmental level are well-matched and improved. CONCLUSIONS To improve China's preliminary PETE program, it is necessary to enhance the environment and institutions using various teaching methods to cultivate expertise, such as practical aspects of university-field linkage and preliminary teacher personality education.

Abstract

[Purpose] This study analyzes ethical issues about genetic technology used for the enhancement of athletes. In so doing, this study aims to rethink gene manipulation in sports and suggest theoretical groundwork for an ethical discussion of gene doping, as well as providing some guidelines. [Methods] For this purpose, this study looks at the relationship between genetic engineering and morality as discussed by eminent domestic and international philosophers, medical ethicists, and scholars of sport studies. Then, the pros and cons of the use of genetic engineering in sport are analyzed to show the different values embedded in each of the opposite positions. [Results] This study identifies three points of debate: fairness, coercion, dignity and autonomy. Through a literary and philosophical review, it is revealed that prior criticism against gene manipulation has logical loopholes. [Conclusion] Rather than approaching the issue with groundless fear and prejudice, it is necessary to look into its benefits and ethical problems in detail. In addition, better equipped ethical as well as practical grounds are required to control the introduction of gene doping technology.
